Dear Friends,

Public statement of the Yearly Meeting of Aotearoa/New Zealand, 1987… From Qf&p 24.10We totally oppose all wars, all preparation for war, all use of weapons and coercion by force, and all military alliances: no end could ever justify such means.‘We equally and actively oppose all that leads to violence among people and nations, and violence to other species and to our planet.’A radio interview last week with Helen Clark, formerly prime minister of New Zealand and a Quaker, reminded me of this passage which Russian Friends in Moscow decided to translate into Russian as an antidote to the Chechen war which was raging at the time with all the usual violent reports in the media. We printed it off for our purposes of peacebuilding in Russia, and we sent it to Helen Clark, who responded with a note of thanks.Unlike our government ministers who seek to justify their policies in all their interviews, Helen Clark’s prime concern was for funding services to save the lives of victims.Friends who need confirmation of the values of humanity against a background of warmongering might like to turn to the message from Aotearoa/New Zealand at 24.10 which ends with these words:‘Together, let us reject the clamour of fear and listen to the whisperings of hope.’ Patricia Cockrellon behalf of the Pastoral Care and Eldership Team (David Hitchin, Chris Lawson, Tim Pitt-Payne, Caroline Pybus, Theresa Samms and Nancy Wall)
